The Early Work

The first step I took was to create simple web pages on my own machine.  I did this using Netscape Navigator Gold, and later with Netscape Communicator
To get pictures bought a Kodak DC50 digital camera,  in October '96.  It cost about A$1,600.  Later I bought (for about A$400) a memory card that extended the camera's memory for highest quality pictures from 7 to 50.
 .

What to say

It has not been easy to work out why I wanted to prepare these pages.

The readers may be family or friends, competitors or colleagues at work, clients, bankers, computer experts, students, or Belinda (who irons my shirts).

I have decided to leave Films, Books, Religion, Music, and how do deal with difficult people for a later time.

Background

In the office we use a very good graphics expert, Steward Petigrew, for our stationery and other printed material.  He devised stationery that had fine white on white lines on it - and I devised this background to mimic his work.  It turned out to be a bit blue, but it looks ok that way.

The Domain Name

I thought that I might have my own domain name and chose the name of my Grandfather's house, Myee.

I found that using the TABNet site I could check if the name was taken - and then take it myself.  TABNet charged US$50 for the service, and there is a US$100 charge made by the official body for two years registration of the name.

A server to host the site

I had planned to have my Melbourne ISP host the site.  When checking prices I found that TABNet in the US could host the site cheaper, and the US site provide faster access for friends overseas.

The cost for 30MB Disc Space is US$300/year and US$125 for the Advanced Statistics Package and US$60 for Server Setup.

 6 September 1997

I downloaded HotDog Professional 4  as an editor.  It cost US$129.95.
  .

 9 September 1997

I downloaded WS_FTP32 recommended by TABNet as a way of uploading to the server the web pages I had developed using Netscape Communicator.  It took a couple of days to find out how to customize it, but it soon worked fine.  I change the names of the files so that they were short and had no gaps or strange characters in the names, and I named the starting page index.html.

11 September 1997

I uploaded to myee.org my first web page.  WS_FTP32 is fairly straight forward and I am off and running.  The real work, work on the content,  now begins.

 4 October 1997

The site is filling out.  Much work needs to be done on Friends and Investment.  I am downloading a permanent version of WS_FTP32 for US$37.30.  The first copy I got was a 30 day free trial.

 9 October 1997

I paid US$50 to TABNet for their work in getting the myee.org domain name.

20 November 1997

For weeks I have been adding a little here, correcting some spelling there.  Nothing dramatic, a few extra pictures.

 7 December 1997

Summer has started and Christmas is not far away.  I have changed the first page to reflect the seasons and have changed the colours of the pages accordingly.

12 July 1998

I changed the way my personal e-mail arrives on my computer.  My local ISP is mira.net.au but also use mira.net    For a few years I have given my e-mail address as ah@myee.org which is a 'Permanent e-mail address' I obtained from i-name at http://www.iname.com/ .  The mail to this address is directed to whatever ISP instruct.  Since I am allowing Kim's nephew Kelly access to my ISP I directed i-name to forward my e-mail to myee.org.  The facility at TABNet (who host myee.org) includes a 'Catch All' e-mail facility and after setting Netscape to access my incoming mail at myee.org it now works sweetly.  It also means that I can access my mail from other locations in the world very easily.

22 August 1998

I paid US$300 to TABNet to host the site for the period 19 August '98 thru 18 August '99 - Billed Annually.

 4 February 1999

I installed on my desktop computer a copy of an HTML editor called HTML Assistant PRO 97 .
This editor was recommended in the book Web Databases with Cold Fusion 3.

29 July 1999

I received by e-mail a bill from Network Solutions, Inc.
The bill covers registration of the Domain Name for 17 August 1999 to 17 August 2000, US$35.  I paid the bill by VISA card on the secure site provided.  You can check the accuracy of the information appearing in the 'WHOIS' database at http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois  .

2 August 1999

I paid US$300 by CitiBank VISA Card to VERIO TABNet to host the site for the period 19 August '99 thru 18 August 2000. (I found this debited to my card, I am not sure how I authorised the debit - AH 20 Sept '99)

26 July 2000

I received by e-mail a bill from Network Solutions, Inc.
The bill covers registration of the Domain Name for 17 August 2000 to 17 August 2001, US$35.  I paid the bill by American Express card on the secure site provided.

6 July 2003

I received from Network Solutions, Inc., by e-mail and by post, a bill for renewal of the registration of the Domain Name myee.org.  I paid US$95 for five years renewal till 17 August 2008. I paid the bill by American Express card on the secure site provided.
